Saulesh Yessenova was one of the lucky observers last week for the launch of the latest Russian Soyuz rocket to deliver astronauts to the International Space Station - see photos.

Yessenova's research project "Cold War and Future Energy in Kazakhstan" examines the refashioning of the historical arms race infrastructures that Kazakhstan inherited from the USSR in response to more recent Western concerns with climate change and energy security. one of the questions she asks is "What role do nuclear power and space exploration (as a means of harnessing minerals and solar energy from space) play in pursuit of energy transition?"
