Please join us on Wednesday February 13th is ES 614 from 3:30-5:30 pm, for the second in a series of seminars organized by the Department of Anthropology and Archaeology’s Heritage Consultant in Residence, Dr. Colin Buchanan.

This seminars topic will be "Indigenous Engagement in Practice: Stories from the Field", with a set of highly qualified speakers, each occupying a unique position in the industry offering varying perspectives on Indigenous consultation policy, best practices for engagement, and how to meaningfully include indigenous peoples and knowledge in the regulatory process.

Speakers: 

Dr. Ave Dersch, Principal, Moccasin Flower Consulting: Dr. Dersch has 15 years of experience working with Indigenous communities in the fields of traditional land and resource use, archaeology, and community-based monitoring of traditional land and resources. Dr. Dersch works with First Nations in Alberta, B.C., New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia to complete traditional land and resource use studies for regulatory environmental assessments and project-specific consultation

Melanie Daniels, Consultation Coordinator, Louis Bull Tribe: Ms. Daniels and has more than 20 years of experience working with First Nations and Metis in an environmental or consultation related capacity. She gained her experience through working with both the Federal and Provincial Governments, First Nations and Métis as well as industry.

Janais Turuk, Manager Community Relations, Energy, Teck Resources Limited: Ms. Turuk is a community relations practitioner with over 10 years of community engagement and consultation experience. Janais joined Teck in 2010 and is responsible for providing leadership in the planning and implementation of community relations consultation and community activities.

Colin Buchanan: Senior Associate, Stantec Consulting Inc. Colin has served as a discipline lead and senior advisor on traditional knowledge and traditional land use (TK/TLU) programs for several major regulatory applications and has considerable experience working collaboratively with Indigenous groups to design and implement TK/TLU studies for regulatory applications. Colin has worked on some of the largest regulatory applications in Canada and appeared as an expert witness before the National Energy Board Joint Review Panel for the Northern Gateway Pipeline Project.
