During field studies, archaeologists put most of their effort into finding archaeological objects and features that they can see, rarely giving a thought to what they might have missed. Humans have left electromagnetic imprints beyond the visible on sites for thousands of years, and these traces can still be detected and interpreted. This presentation summarizes the evidence for these invisible traces, discovered first by chance and substantiated more recently through purposeful study. Examples of these invisible traces, from around North America and most recently from the FM Ranch site near Calgary, are discussed. As are the prospects of using a 3D magnetometer to help record these features in the future.
